Higginsons shortlisted for prestigious Q Guild of Butchers Smithfield Star Awards

Higginsons were one of thirty Q Guild butchers who entered the competition from across the country. A total of 220 individual products were submitted and judged blind at the Regional Food Academy at Harper Adams University in Newport by an independent panel of food and meat sector experts led by Institute of Meat Chief Executive Keith Fisher. They were each awarded according to a star rating scoring system, with 73 products achieving the top score of 3 stars. These products were then further pitched against each other and re-judged for the top ‘Diamond’ award in each category.

The Institute of Meat Chief Executive Keith Fisher said, “As a 30-year supporter of the Q Guild’s Smithfield Awards I was pleased to see this year how their continued product development has kept with the times. The range entered showcased they are producing products suitable for today’s consumers, bearing in mind lifestyles and tastes.” 

Q Guild General Manager Claire Holland added: “The members did the Q Guild proud this year. The judges were treated to some outstanding products and many supported the new categories, which I hope to see grow year on year.”

 

Higginsons submitted three of their products for judging, including their ‘Saturday night-in’ Chicken Curry Sausage, their Festive Stuffed Pheasant and their Brisket, Black Garlic and Caramelised Onion Burger.

Higginsons, alongside the other shortlisted butchers will now have to wait until the awards are presented at a ceremony in the refurbished Butchers Hall in London on 24th March, to learn if any of their products have made the cut.

Mark Porter, General Manager at Higginsons commented, “We are eager to see if we pick up a Diamond Award for any of our products. We chose to enter some of our more unusual seasonal and limited-edition products this year to show the judges something different. The flavours in the three products really speak for themselves but we’ll see what the judges thought when we get to London”.
