Higginsons of Grange clinch double accolade in Q Guild Butchers Awards

Higginsons Butchers & Pie Makers are delighted to announce that we have picked up honours in the Q Guild of Butchers 2020 Smithfield ‘Star’ Awards.


The Main Street shop bagged a brace of awards, including a top-ranked 3*** accolade, which was also shortlisted in the ‘Game Ready Meal’ category finalist for a ‘best of the best’ Diamond award.


The category finalist was a ‘Festive Stuffed Pheasant’, described by Higginsons’ General Manager, Mark Porter as “an alternative to the traditional turkey dinner”, adding “Our stuffed pheasant is a real festive treat that is simple to cook and easy to carve. It’s a boneless local pheasant from the Cartmel Valley filled with our home-made cranberry; chestnut and orange forcemeat, plus a generous splash of orange Cointreau, and wrapped in our home-cured streaky bacon”


Judges were mightily impressed, describing it as having “excellent construction, cooked well, moist and juicy to taste, with great overall flavours.”


Higginsons of Grange also clinched 2** with their ‘Saturday Night-In Sausage’, a product developed by their butchers after being announced as the winner of their in-house National Sausage Week Competition in 2019. Mr Porter dubbed it “a taste of Britain's most popular takeaway; the Chicken curry - reinvented in a sausage!”


He said “Naturally, we’re over the moon to be shortlisted for a category-leading Diamond award in the face of such strong competition from our fellow butchers nationwide. While we didn’t strike Diamond this year we came very close and the positive comments made by judges will hopefully help us to progress to bigger and better things next year.”


For the first time this year, the revamped Smithfield ‘Star’ Awards had a brand-new star rating system through which 3***, 2** or 1* certificates were awarded to products achieving a set standard.


Butchers Q Guild General Manager Claire Holland said: “These awards are a great way of showcasing our members and their achievements. They work really hard to develop outstanding products and to keep up with consumer trends therefore to have it topped off with an industry judged accolade is the icing on the cake.”
